A few years ago I started a tradition of donating my time and some of my financial resources to one ambitious side project a year. Up to this point, these projects have been for friends of mine who would not have been able to afford productions of this scale. By combining our resources alongside the help of many friends who were generous enough to lend their skills and join the production crew, we were able to pull off a couple projects we can all be proud of. These projects are important to me, it allows me a different kind of creative freedom that I may not have on my everyday projects. In these scenarios I’m also able to test new methods and push my boundaries. And from these experiences I’m able to bring new perspectives and skills to my traditional projects. Even more importantly, the finished products helped my friends advance their own projects and goals. I believe in everyone I’ve worked with on these projects, the friends who have been the subject matter as well as the friends who have pitched in as part of the crew. I’m proud to invest in opportunities for these talented people as well as myself.
